Tell Us Your Story

With all of the different coverage options for your insurance policy, it’s no wonder you might’ve forgotten about the most important add-on. This is uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, which could leave you hurting in more than one way if you don’t have it! I find that not explaining this vital coverage to their clients is one of the worst mistakes any Herndon, Virginia insurance agent can make.

It’s sad enough that agents don’t make sure their clients have enough coverage, but what’s even worse is that some Virginia residents don’t have car insurance at all! It’s a bit absurd, but the Commonwealth does allow you to pay a small fee and drive without an insurance policy. For anyone who wants a tiny bit of protection and a few more dollars in their pocket every month, Virginia allows insurance companies to sell bare minimum policies. This may sound like a sweet deal, but holding onto a little bit of money isn’t going to save you when things hit the fan and you are left hurting financially and physically after an accident!

When you make the decision to buy proper coverage on your insurance policy or your when your agent pushes you to raise your limits, then you’re on the right track! However, having good coverage for your liability doesn’t protect you from the drivers out there with low limits or from those with no car insurance at all!

If the worst case scenario occurred and you were hit by a driver without insurance, then you’re left with the bill – simple as that! However, if you made the decision to follow my advice here and get uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage then you are about as safe and prepared as you can be.

Look at it this way, if the other driver who caused the accident has a bare minimum policy, their limits will be exhausted in a severe-enough accident. This will leave you paying the remainder of the damage unless you have uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. The coverage will pick up the tab where the other person’s insurance coverage left you hanging while you potentially are racking up bills while laying on a hospital bed.

But what about the Umbrella policy you paid for? Well, damage caused by uninsured and underinsured drivers won’t be covered under that. It’s pretty unfortunate, but something that a lot of insurance agents “forget to share."

What you need according to a local insurance expert is to have $250,000 in liability coverage. This will also allow you to tack on an umbrella, which you’ll want to be at least 1 million in coverage. Adding the umbrella may cost you as little as $10-$20 per month! This of course depends on a number of things, such as driving record, current coverage, etc.

These are the main pieces to building a solid and supported insurance policy with all of the necessary coverage components. Before you make any decision on buying insurance, take some time to meet with the top local independent agents. This will get you started and on a path to full protection with your coverage.
