On March 8, 2019, local referee and attorney, Ben Glass, will launch the 2019 BenGlassLaw Varsity Soccer Sportsmanship Challenge. This year's participants are the boys’ and girls’ high school varsity teams at Charles J. Colgan HS, Forest Park HS, Freedom HS, Gar-Field HS, C.D. Hylton HS, Potomac HS, Woodbridge HS, Battlefield HS, Stonewall Jackson HS, Osbourn HS, Osborn Park HS, Patriot HS, Annadale HS, Mount Vernon HS, West Potomac HS, and T.C. Williams HS.

Ben Glass will donate $500 to each team to use as they see fit (up to $1,000 per school) if that team completes the season without receiving a red or yellow card due to unsportsmanlike conduct.

Ben Glass has been a soccer referee in Northern Virginia since 1974. Over the last decade, he has witnessed a steady decline in sportsmanship and respect for opponents and sports officials. Mr. Glass has said, “this decline of sportsmanship has created a referee shortage that threatens the future of the game.” He hopes to change this outcome by deterring unsportsmanlike behavior from players, coaches, and parents.
