Former employees of the Fairfax Nursing Center filed a suit two years ago claiming the nursing home gave unnecessary medical attention to 37 Medicare patients. The unnecessary treatments were given in order to obtain higher reimbursement rates. According to the Department of Justice, the False Claims Act has "resulted in the collection of almost $10.2B" from cases like this since January 2009.
Employees of the Fairfax Nursing Center noticed that patients weren't being discharged in a timely manner, and those employees were threatened to be fired by the nursing home if they discussed discharge options with patients. Patients had even refused services, and the nursing home continued to monitor them and collect money from their Medicare.
