Temporary total disability or "lost wages" starts in a Virginia worker's compensation claim when you have been taken out of work for 7 days. Once you have been out of work for 21 days you will also be reimbursed for the first 7 days. For most injuries, 9 1/2 years provides adequate compensation, but for many it won't be.

If you can work light duty (this depends on what the doctor says) and you are getting paid less by the employer, you can get two-thirds of the difference betweeen your old pay and your new (light duty) pay. You can also get cost of living (COLA) adjustments each year.
