With all those advertisements out there you as a consumer maybe wondering why some of them are so outrageous.
Here are five things to keep in mind when reading lawyers' advertisements:
- Lawyer advertising can actually negatively affect the people who sit on juries. How bad would it be for your case if the jury and judge recall that the lawyer arguing your case was the fellow who equates people’s misery to monetary awards? Answer: Very Bad. Something you should keep in mind is jurors and judges watch TV just as much as you do.
- Surveys have shown that people have a poor view of lawyers mostly because of the advertisements they see! Honestly, saying “quick cash for your pain” is horrible. These sorts of ads are done in poor taste and make all lawyers look bad.
- Some lawyer advertising may create overly high expectations. If other lawyers can say “One call-no court- settlements in 30 days,” then our clients want to know how come we can’t do that for them. The truth is that if your case didn’t need to go to court and could be settled in 30 days, then you probably could settle it yourself.
- You really can’t tell one Fredericksburg lawyer from another solely based on the ads you see. Most of those ads aren’t really giving you any useful information about the quality of the attorney.
- Even if the ads aren’t deceptive, misleading, or false, they still aren’t all that helpful for you. What’s the difference between an ad saying “our food tastes awesome” and “call 1-800-GIMMICKYNUMBER right now?” Have you truly learned anything from either of them?
We can’t change the way lawyers advertise, but we can at least try to help you make it through the situation you are in. There are plenty of good lawyers out there, but they aren’t going to come to you. You need to do some work to find the right lawyer for your case.
