Just about everyone – from lawmakers to the public – has an opinion regarding driver distractions. Some believe that cell phones aren’t that dangerous, while others would argue the opposite. Regardless of which stance you take on distracted driving, statistics have shown that it is a problem. In the last five years, there have been over 140,000 distracted driving accidents in Virginia.

April is the official Distracted Driving Awareness Month. As safety organizations are working to spread the word about the potential hazards of distracted driving, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has also jumped on board.

Practicing attentive and cautious driving is as important as wearing a seat belt.

WHSV.com quoted Virginia Health Commissioner Karen Remley, MD, MBA, FAAP as saying, “practicing attentive and cautious driving is as important as wearing a seat belt, and properly installing and using child safety seats. We urge you to make a commitment to focus your full attention on the road while driving.”

Don’t let a distraction cause a Herndon car accident.  Make sure you adhere to the following safety tips by the VDH:

  • Put your cell phone away while you are behind the wheel.
  • Preset electronics, such as GPS devices and the radio, before driving.
  • If you need to concentrate on something other than driving, pull over to a safe place.
  • Let your friends, family members and co-workers know that you won’t be taking calls while you are driving.
