Misdiagnosis of Symptoms
A slightly different type of misdiagnosis is when the symptoms are improperly identified and analyzed. A doctor may identify that a patient is suffering from certain symptoms and treat those symptoms, but fail to diagnose the overall cause of the symptoms. This is just another example of a valid Virginia medical malpractice claim.
Treating the symptoms of a condition is not the same as treating the condition itself. Often, if the doctor focuses on just the symptoms, they provide false relief that allows damage to still persist. The patient doesn't learn about this until it is too late. For example, a patient complaining of headaches gets a prescription for migraine pain relief. This takes care of the pain, but they may have a brain tumor that continues to grow and spread.
Doctors who only treat symptoms and do not test for common causes of those symptoms are doing you a disservice. Many Virginia medical malpractice claims are created when a doctor fails to look into why you are experiencing your particular symptoms and allows a critical condition to go unchecked.
There is Such a Thing as Too Much Treatment
You've unknowingly been misdiagnosed with a condition and are now being treated for it. Meanwhile, the affliction you're really suffering from is going unchecked, maybe even being made worse by whatever treatment you're undergoing. You are currently paying for treatment you don't need, while missing out on the treatment you do need. Eventually when this is discovered, you will have to pay even more for the correct treatment.
It's all a sad inflation of your medical costs and unless you file a Virginia medical malpractice claim you'll be responsible for those unfair costs. There have even been cases of doctors over diagnosing a patient, suggesting high-cost treatments and surgeries, when their actual condition is not as severe as they make it out to be.
