Your Ideal Accident Case Settlement is On Your Desk – Now What?

If you didn’t need a Fairfax accident lawyer to settle your case, you’ll be responsible for finalizing your accident case settlement as negotiations draw to a close. The actual process is a simple signature on the settlement release, but that one signature could seal your future rights to file a lawsuit if you don’t read the fine print.

A general settlement release will typically contain legal jargon that amounts to giving up your rights to pursue any future legal action against the insurance company or the other driver. This means that if your settlement runs out before you’ve paid off all of your damages you have no ability to file another claim or lawsuit.

This is where it’s important to be absolutely certain that the amount for which you are about to settle your accident case is enough to cover your current damages and future projected losses.

Paying Off Your Medical Debts with Your Case Settlement

Your medical debts will most likely be the largest portion of your settlement, if not the only portion. There are certain medical debts that you will be personally responsible for repaying with your settlement funds, but the insurance company won’t tell you this. They’ll issue the check and be done with you; there will be no guidance as to how your settlement should be used.

Don’t look at your settlement check as fun money – watch your mail carefully for letters from any entities that paid for your medical care as you settled your case. If you are unsure of who you owe money to and for which expenses, it may be that you do need a Fairfax accident lawyer to advise you on the finalization of your case. Insurance companies do not have to help you pay back anyone to whom you owe money.
