It sounds like general common sense when I tell you that you should follow your doctor’s orders after you’ve had a minor injury from an accident. However, because your injuries are minor, you may feel like you don’t have to really go through all the appointments, therapy and medications. If you’re settling your own accident case, neglecting your doctor’s orders could be one of the worst things you can do.

When you’re seeking medical treatment, there are six tips you should remember:

  • to keep all your appointments (even if you’re feeling fine);
  • to inform your doctor of all changes to your condition (for better or worse);
  • to take all medications according to directions;
  • to tell your doctor about previous medical conditions or allergies;
  • don’t make the decision as to when your treatment is over (let your doctor make the decision); and
  • don’t neglect to tell your doctor about changes in mood, behavior or sleeping patterns.

Not only can following these tips help recover more quickly, but they’ll also help save your accident claim. When you settle your claim without the help of a lawyer, you need to be your own manager. Make sure you keep up with everything related to your medical care, whether it's bills or pills. Records are the key to creating a solid accident case.

There are several mistakes you can make when dealing with doctors and medical treatments that can make settling your accident case on your own much more complicated. My book has a great section in the back with a list of these mistakes and advice on how to avoid them.

Why Hire a Lawyer to Settle Your Accident Case When You Don’t Need One?

Your doctors are there to heal your injuries, but if you don’t know how to handle seeking the right medical documentation, you could jeopardize your accident case. When you’re attempting to settle your case on your own, you won’t need a lawyer – unless you don’t take the right steps when working with doctors!

If you think you’re ready to handle your accident case on your own, I encourage you to visit my website and download a FREE digital copy of my book Get It Settled!
