A practice area is merely a way that lawyers can describe the areas of law in which they practice and the types of cases they handle. There’s no rule inRichmondorVirginiastating that a lawyer needs certain credentials to advertise that he or she practices a specific area of law.
Advertising Practice Areas
A personal injury lawyer can choose to advertise any number of specialties. Here are a few you’ll see are common in personal injury ads:
- car accidents;
- slip and falls;
- animal attacks/dog bites;
- medical malpractice;
- dangerous drugs;
- Workers’ Compensation; and
- defective products.
I tell clients that the best attorney for their personal injury claim is one who sticks to a few types of cases and focuses on cases like theirs. You should always go to an in-person consultation to determine if an attorney is right for you. Just because attorneys’ profiles say they handle certain cases doesn’t mean they’re any good at it!
A Practice Area Is Only a Guideline
A practice area listed on a lawyer ad is only a suggestion that they can handle those cases, not a trustworthy guarantee. What you can trust is the information a good personal injury lawyer lists about his or her case history and testimonials regarding experience.
