We all need a friend after we’ve been injured in a car accident, but you shouldn’t start being chummy with insurance adjusters. It sounds mean of me to say this, but the truth is they’re probably NOT that concerned with getting you a fair settlement for your accident claim.

One of the tactics insurance companies use to devalue or deny your accident claim is to have their adjusters become very familiar with you. When you try to settle your case on your own they’ll put you at ease by talking to you about your job, family and life in the hopes of getting information from you that could damage your claim.

For example, you used to run marathons for charity. It is a great thing to do, until you sprained your knee. This old injury has nothing to do with your current injuries from the car accident, but the insurance adjusters could and will use that old injury against you.

Insurance adjusters are trained to find any information about your life and injuries that could be used to lower the amount of compensation the insurance company owes you. When you don’t think you need a lawyer and settle your case on your own, you need to know how to handle the insurance companies on your own
