The best lawyer for your case may not be in your own backyard. I’m just one of many Fairfax personal injury lawyers in the area, and I’m not going to tell you I’m the best one to take your case unless I’m confident that I can help.
So if you live in a tiny suburb and can’t seem to find the best lawyer in your area, how far do you go? That depends on your case and willingness to travel.
Lawyer Credentials Aren’t City Specific
Unless your city has a local organization that ranks and credentials attorneys in your area, you’re still looking for the same important lawyer credentials. Ask potential attorneys if they have an AVVO or Martindale-Hubbell rating, if they’re included in the Best Lawyers in America or Super Lawyers, and if they’re board certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Whatever the location, whether Fairfax or Richmond, an attorney should have trustworthy credentials. Of course, excellent lawyers won’t always have all of these particular credentials – these are just on my short list of lawyer credentials you can’t buy.
Think About This Before You Travel for a Lawyer
The nature of your legal issue will bear heavily upon your willingness to travel. Digital communications have reduced the amount of physical paperwork and face-to-face meetings necessary for a legal case. However, there are many legal matters that require in-person contact with your attorney and many types of cases that can restrict your ability to travel such as if you were seriously injured in an accident.
If you CAN travel, you need to decide how far is too far. While most of your paperwork can usually be done electronically by fax or scan, you may still need to sign some documents at the law office to have them notarized. Phone consultations are fine, but to really find the right lawyer, I feel you need to meet him or her in person. That's even one of my five steps to finding the best lawyer.
