Ben’s Background

Most people who meet attorney Ben Glass come to know him as a father of nine (four of them adopted from China; Ben explains the adoption story in this video), grandfather to seven, business coach, author, charity supporter, and soccer referee. He has spent his career practicing injury and disability law in courtrooms throughout Virginia and the eastern half of the United States.

Born and raised in Annandale, Ben is a 1983 graduate of the George Mason University School of Law (after attending William and Mary for undergraduate work). Since that time, he has practiced exclusively in the areas of personal injury, ERISA, and private disability insurance law. Today, Mr. Glass concentrates his practice in representing those who have been denied short or long-term disability or life insurance benefits, leading the complex claim and Federal Court Appellate Litigation division of the firm. He prides himself in being more than a lawyer, but a “life coach” to many of his clients.

A National Leader of Lawyers

Ben is the host of the Renegade Lawyer Podcast and the ERISA Disability and Life Insurance Litigation Podcast and is a nationally recognized attorney, speaker and author who has been featured on over 75 podcasts because of his ‘renegade’ brand of lawyering. A recognized expert among his peers, lawyers travel from around the United States and Canada for quarterly meetings in order to be trained by Ben and his team in the Ben Glass Center for Growth and Innovation, where he coaches others on how to build a thriving business and make it home for dinner. He has been featured in or quoted by Lawyers Weekly Virginia, The Washington Post, Washington Post Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, ABC News Online, Wall Street Journal, and “The Next Big Thing” Radio Show.

Charity Work

Ben served on the Board of Directors for over a decade and is a long time supporter of Love Without Boundaries, an international charity that provides hope and healing to orphaned and vulnerable children, and their underserved communities, through its education, nutrition, medical, and foster care programs. Ben also coaches members of the Love Without Boundaries leadership team.

When Ben isn’t busy helping the clients of BenGlassLaw, he enjoys meeting new people and asking them about their ‘superpower’, fostering dogs with his wife of forty-three years, challenging himself at CrossFit (he also holds a CrossFit Level One Coaching Certificate), or refereeing youth and high school soccer games, a practice that dates back to his time at Thomas Jefferson High School and playing soccer on scholarship at William and Mary (he is the author of a leading book for teenage soccer referees) and serves on the Board of Directors for the Commonwealth Soccer Officials Association.

Ben is a coach and mentor to teenage soccer referees.

Ben is a nationally recognized and highly sought out speaker and expert in the legal profession and has a large following on LinkedIn for his insights into life and the profession.

Arguing in the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of a coal miner denied long-term disability benefits under ERISA.

Arguing in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of a widow who’s life insurance claim under ERISA was denied by Lincoln Life Insurance Company after her husband’s employer had switched life insurance companies.

Arguing in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal on behalf of a claimant who had been denied her fundamental right, under ERISA, to her long-term disability claim file.

From the mind of Ben Glass:

Favorite thing about your role: Helping our clients and growing and mentoring a great team.

Favorite thing about working at BGL: The team we have built.

A highlight of your career at BGL: Every case win is a highlight because we are changing lives, but a particular highlight was recovering $6 million for the family of an elementary school child who was killed by a mechanical wall in the school’s gym.

Interesting fact about yourself: I loved tax law in law school but my first law job was with one of the top trial lawyers in America and I saw what a difference in people’s lives that a good trial lawyer can make.

You can spend 24-hours with someone dead or alive – who would it be: Mark Geiger, famous American soccer referee.

If you had a time machine, what time period would you travel to? The 60’s just to watch my young self and see if what I think I remember is what actually happened.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Call my tax lawyer.

What is your guilty pleasure? When I am out of town on a speaking engagement, crawling into bed by 9:00 p.m.
